Avid DNx Wins 2026 Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Award Avid DNx Wins 2026 Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Award

Avid Technology has received a 2026 Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy® Award from the Television Academy for the development of Avid DNx™, its professional video codec family. The recognition marks Avid’s 20th Emmy Award and highlights the impact of DNx on television and film production workflows.

The Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards recognize technologies that have made a significant contribution to the production, recording, transmission, or reception of television. Avid DNx was recognized for its role in helping professional production teams work efficiently while maintaining high-quality media throughout the post-production process.

What Is Avid DNx?

Avid DNx is a family of professional video codecs designed for editing and post-production workflows. The codecs use intraframe compression, allowing individual frames to be accessed independently. This makes DNx well suited to editing environments where responsive playback and efficient media handling are important.

The DNx family includes different formats for different production needs. DNxHD was developed for HD workflows, while DNxHR supports higher-resolution workflows, including 4K and beyond.

Avid DNx is also standardized by SMPTE as VC-3, allowing the technology to be used across a wider professional media ecosystem.

Why Avid DNx Matters for Post-Production

Codecs are an important part of the post-production workflow. The right codec can affect how smoothly media plays back, how quickly editors can work, and how easily files can move between different stages of production.

Avid DNx is designed to help production teams:

  • Edit high-quality video efficiently
  • Maintain responsive playback on complex timelines
  • Access individual frames without relying on interframe decoding
  • Move media between different stages of post-production
  • Reduce unnecessary transcoding
  • Preserve image quality and creative decisions throughout the workflow

This makes DNx useful across a range of professional environments, from television and film editing to finishing, shared media workflows, and fast-turnaround production.

Avid DNx and Media Composer

Avid DNx is used natively within Avid Media Composer, Avid’s professional video editing software.

Media Composer has been used for decades across film, television, broadcast, and other professional production environments. Native support for DNx gives editors a codec family designed specifically around the demands of professional editing and post-production.

DNx can be used across different stages of a workflow, from lower-bandwidth proxy media through higher-quality finishing formats. This flexibility helps teams manage large amounts of media while keeping the editing process efficient.

The Team Behind Avid DNx

The Emmy recognizes the Avid team responsible for the development and continued evolution of DNx:

  • Shailendra Mathur
  • Markus Weber
  • Katie Cornog
  • Dane Kottke
  • Michel Rynderman

Their work helped establish and evolve DNx as a professional codec family for the changing requirements of television and film production.

Avid Chief Technology Officer Tom Sharma said the award recognizes both the people behind DNx and the technology’s impact on modern television and film workflows.

Avid’s 20th Emmy Award

The recognition is another milestone in Avid’s long history of developing technology for professional media production.

With the 2026 Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Award, Avid has now received 20 Emmy Awards. The company will officially receive the award at the 2026 Engineering, Science & Technology Emmy Awards ceremony on October 14, 2026, at the Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, California.

For editors and post-production teams, the award also highlights the importance of the technology working behind the scenes. While codecs may not be the most visible part of a production system, they have a direct impact on how media is edited, managed, transferred, and finished.
