Blackmagic Design has released DaVinci Resolve 21 Public Beta 4, bringing updates across editing, color management, Fusion, Fairlight, AI-powered tools, and photo workflows.

This beta release focuses on workflow refinements, compatibility updates, performance improvements, and bug fixes for professional post-production environments.


Important Compatibility Information

Blackmagic Design confirmed that project libraries remain compatible with DaVinci Resolve 20.3.2. However, projects opened or created in DaVinci Resolve 21.0b4 can no longer be reopened in 20.3.2.

Before updating, Blackmagic Design recommends:

  • Backing up the entire project library
  • Creating separate backups for individual projects

AI Tool Improvements

DaVinci Resolve 21 Public Beta 4 includes several updates for AI-assisted workflows:

  • Improved visual quality for AI CineFocus
  • Better handling for AI Blemish Removal
  • Reduced shimmer artifacts caused by AI Blemish Removal
  • Fixed issues where AI Blemish Removal affected areas outside the face
  • Improved Magic Mask render handling for clips with handles
  • Fixed incorrect render resolution behavior in some Magic Mask workflows

These updates improve reliability when working with automated cleanup and AI-based effects.


Color Management and HDR Updates

This release adds:

  • Support for Insta360 I-Log gamma in color management
  • Trim pass selection for:
    • Dolby Vision
    • HDR10+
    • HDR Vivid

Blackmagic Design also fixed several image decoding and color management issues affecting:

  • Canon CR2 and CR3 files
  • Fujifilm XF10 RAF images
  • Certain DNG files
  • ProRaw DNG workflows

Additional fixes address:

  • Crushed highlights in Canon RAW images
  • Purple highlight artifacts in some Fujifilm RAF files
  • Incorrect color decoding in specific DNG formats
  • Dolby Vision IMF metadata issues

Photo Workflow Updates

The Photo workflow introduced in Resolve 21 receives several usability updates in Beta 4.

New additions include:

  • Media Pool indicators showing photo usage in albums
  • Paste and remove attributes support for photos
  • Improved live preview behavior
  • More consistent data burn logo handling
  • Retention of Photo page effect favorites

Blackmagic Design also fixed issues involving:

  • Incorrect photo crop resets
  • Source transform and orientation resets
  • Resolve FX alignment on photos
  • Resolve FX Warper behavior on photo-based workflows

Final Cut Pro 12 FCPXML Support

DaVinci Resolve 21.0b4 now supports importing and exporting Final Cut Pro 12 FCPXML files.

This improves compatibility between Resolve and Final Cut Pro workflows, making project exchange easier for collaborative editing environments.


Editing and Timeline Workflow Improvements

This beta includes several timeline and editing workflow updates:

  • Ability to toggle retime frame inputs between frame count and timecode
  • Improved marker placement behavior on trimmed clips
  • Reduced lag when moving large numbers of clips with visible keyframes
  • Better multicam audio handling during multicam creation
  • Fixed issues detaching synced audio from linked clips
  • Improved handling for clips with multiple audio channels in the Cut page
  • Switching between A mode and C mode now automatically deselects clips
  • Fixed viewer line behavior for vertical timelines on the Color page

Fusion and Fairlight Updates

Fusion updates include:

  • Keyframe editor support for Fusion motion paths and modifiers
  • Fixed Fusion floating window issues after resetting layouts
  • Improved dual-screen workflow behavior for Photo compositions
  • Fixed issues with Fusion paint tools on non-default layers
  • Improved OpenEXR loading from DRFX files
  • Fixed OGraf issues involving non-square pixels
  • Fixed OGraf and Lottie workflow issues on network drives

Fairlight improvements include:

  • Better automation line display on Retina displays
  • Improved Music Retimer handling for audio with significant tempo changes

Workflow Integration and System Fixes

Additional fixes and improvements include:

  • Remote Monitor now installs automatically with DaVinci Resolve on Windows
  • Improved GetStills API workflow integration
  • Fixed Presentation and Dropbox marker behavior during background rendering
  • Improved background render status reporting when using audio normalization
  • Fixed Blackmagic RAW metadata handling for good take clips
  • Improved handling of good take tags in older projects and presets
  • Fixed Panasonic P2 clips incorrectly displaying as MXF files

Blackmagic Design also included general performance and stability improvements across the application.
