ATTO ExpressNVM Smart NVMe Switch Host Adapters are built to intelligently aggregate and accelerate attached NVMe storage devices, making it easier to build high-performance NVMe storage arrays for local and distributed storage networks. As NVMe flash drives continue to outperform traditional HDD and SSD storage, many system builders and OEMs face a common challenge. NVMe performance is exceptional, but NVMe devices can be difficult to aggregate into larger pools, and management capabilities are significantly reduced compared to traditional SAS and Ethernet technology.
ExpressNVM host bus adapters solve these issues by providing a unique option to create shareable NVMe storage pools with enterprise-level management and configuration capabilities. These adapters allow integrators to create scalable, high-capacity, dense storage that can be shared and managed across distributed storage networks. ExpressNVM controllers provide connections for up to eight NVMe drives on a single PCIe Gen3 or Gen4 slot, and these eight-drive groups scale linearly to form the building blocks for high-capacity, high-performance, low latency storage arrays.
ATTO ExpressNVM also addresses the flexibility challenges introduced by PCIe-based storage. Enterprise storage depends on dynamic device discovery and hot swap, but PCIe technology relies on persistent connections that can make outside-the-box storage inconsistent. ExpressNVM controllers bridge this gap by providing drive isolation, preventing misbehaving drives from impacting performance or pulling down other devices on the PCIe bus. This makes ExpressNVM a stronger fit for enterprise deployments than many NVMe solutions that depend on PCIe bus bifurcation, auxiliary power limitations, and airflow constraints.
Management is a key differentiator. Much of the storage management functionality present in SAS was stripped from the NVMe specification. ExpressNVM controllers restore enterprise-level visibility and control with a full suite of out-of-band management tools that allow logging and data collection without impacting performance or latency. Accelerated by an onboard microprocessor, ExpressNVM supports device inventory, VPD, device configuration, monitoring, OS integration, firmware upgrades, predictive failure analysis, extensive telemetry and logging, and a gateway to management protocols such as Redfish.
Designed for performance-sensitive workloads, ExpressNVM is ideal for environments evaluating NVMe storage to address IOPS, bandwidth, and latency limitations while reducing bottlenecks across computing, networking, and application layers. ExpressNVM provides an easy-to-implement, high-performance interface with the management capabilities needed to support enterprise-level storage architectures.
